Dec 2009 - Reward for our efforts. Why the Green Room Won

Gavin Willis and Roger Gullidge, Joint MD’s of Paradigm Designers are wowed once more as they travel to Cornwall with the winner’s prize

As we drove up to the Green Room Dental Practice on a crisp, sunny morning last December, Roger and I were reminded why this practice is so special and why it so impressed us when we first visited it a year back.

Of course, and more importantly, the presentation joint Principals Richard and Sally Hudson made to the WOW! Awards judges in March last year impressed the judges to the extent that it was voted overall winner. And they were up against some serious competition.

The purpose of the Dental Practice WOW! Awards, which Paradigm co-sponsors, is to recognise and reward practices that demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the patient experience. Relatively stringent entry criteria apply, so only the very best make it through to the finals. In short, Richard and Sally had and have every reason to be proud of their practice and what it is achieving.

The unashamed delight they expressed when they won the Award was clearly evident again when Roger and I presented their prize...a limited edition print from his Reef Swimmer Series by the renowned Liverpool artist, Bill Bate. Roger chose the artwork because he felt it captured the mood and spirit of the practice. We loved it, but there’s always that nervous moment when you wait to see how it will be received. So Sally’s immediate decision to give it pride of place in reception was reassuring.

We asked how the year had been and the impact of winning the WOW! Award.

“Winning the Award has been a great boost for morale and a real vindication of the investment we have made” was Richard’s view, “Our patient numbers have grown steadily despite the recession and the demand for implants has doubled compared with this time last year”.

Although the Green Room was voted a clear overall winner of the WOW! Awards, Sally had told me that she had greatly benefited from listening to and learning from the other finalists. “I learned more that day than from any seminar I have attended” she’d said. And that got me thinking...

Sharing ideas and improving the patient experience have been the true essence of the WOW! concept. The winner of the first Awards, David Houston and Richard and Sally have much in common. They are willing to learn and willing to embrace new ideas. Equally they are happy to share the ingredients of their recipes for success with others. More news of this in the next few issues of Dental Practice.

As we left, I thanked Richard and Sally for sponsoring me when I ran the London Marathon last April. Sally mentioned that Richard was doing the notorious Norsman Iron Man in August...a 2.5 mile swim, a 112 mile cycle ride, finishing with a full 26.5 mile marathon. A good time for the course is 16 hours (it’s that tough) and Richard is aiming to beat that. And I thought my Marathon was some achievement!

It certainly gives a new meaning to the phrase ‘fit to practise’.

Nov 2009 - Vatech PaX-Uni3D

green room new xray

Digital technology has moved on enormously since we installed our first digital x-ray system over 6 years ago. With the huge growth in demand for implant and rehabilitation treatment we really needed the best diagnostic tools we could find. Our search led us to E-Woo, a fantastic company who import the worlds finest digital x-ray machines.

Our machine takes panoramic images of the teeth, jaws, jaw joints and sinuses. This is all achieved with drastically reduced x-ray exposure and more acurate and detailed image quality than traditional film. This also has environmental benefits as we do not need to use film or all the chemicals required to develop them. It even plays music during the scan!

May 2009 - Richard holds his first lecture

green room masterclass

Part of the plan for the practice was to be a venue for dental education. Now that more and more dentists refer patients to us for implants we thought it would be nice for these dentists to get more involved. On the 20th May I held a course on how to fit a crown (tooth) to an implant to a group of like minded dentists. This involved a lecture, a live demonstration and a practical. The evening went really well and we plan to hold many more. Ultimately we may invite guest lecturers to use our superb venue.

April 2009 - Green Room Win the WOW Awards

Recognising our spectacular new practice and our 'investment in improving the patient experience'. We won the best practice in a small town and were the overall winners in the UK.

The highest accolade was given to Green Room Dentistry for the clarity of principals Richard and Sally Hudson's drive to realise their vision of a complete treatment centre, newly built in a tranquil green acre of gardens.

September 2008 - Two years on!

green room two years on

Finally, almost 2 years after aquiring Trenance Lodge, we opened our doors for business. It has been a long hard slog but we now have a very special dental practice. We are truly state of the art and benefit from our on-site Dental Laboratory, Osteopaths and Beauty Spa.

November 2007 - Implant education in Germany

Richard attended further implant education in Germany. "I found this course really useful to keep at the forefront of implant dentistry. The first day, in Hanau, was lectures about the Ankylos implant system, simply the best there is. We looked at new techniques in relation to technology and materials.

The second day was spent at Dr Giesehagen's Implant Centre in Melsungen. We watched new surgical techniques performed live through out the day and in between discussed the merits, research and science of these techniques. As is normal on these courses I learned a great deal from discussions with my fellow Implant Dentists over breakfast, lunch and dinner!"

September 2007 - Richard completes final leg of Dentaid charity bike ride to Land's End

On the 9th September 2007 Richard joined the ride form just outside Newquay to its conclusion at Land's End raising over £400 in sponsorship."It is a really worthwhile charity and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. I joined Kenton and Simon who had ridden all the way from John O' Groats and did my best to keep the moral and the pace up. From Marazion to Land's End we took the coast road and with blue skies it was breathtaking". To see what it was all about visit the website.

August 2007 - Richard had been elected onto the
Association of Dental Implantology Committee

Richard has been elected to represent the South West of England on the Committee of the Association of Dental Implantology. The mission of the Association is the advancement of education in the field of implantology for the benefit of the public.

"I have had great support from the ADI and its members and I am grateful of the opportunity to put in some hard work myself. I will also host regular Study Clubs here in the South West where like-minded dentists can get together to look at particular aspects of Implant Dentistry. We typically start with a lecture and follow up with discussion. The quality of the lectures is typically very high and we attract speakers from all over the world".

April 2007 - New Practice

New Practice

Green Room Dentistry

We are really excited to have received planning consent to transform Trenance Lodge into a dental practice. We are confident this will be among the finest practices nationally and enable us to go forward with constantly improving the service we provide.

Our architect Richard Mitzman, the most forward thinking and innovative in the dental field, is finalising the design as I write this. Richard was one of the premier dentists in the UK, spent a while as a sculptor then re-trained in architecture. He has won awards for his work from the Royal Institite of British Architects. The benefits to our patients will be:

• lots of parking

• more flexible appointment hours

• a more private reception area

• a complete range of advanced dentistry under one roof

• as we should run more efficiently we should run to time more of the time

• space to embrace new technology

• We will inform you all when the move will take place and it is likely to be Easter 2008.

July 2007 - Sally and Richard attend the Vanini Masterclass

Dr Lorenzo Vanini is one of the world's leading dentists and has developed the finest system for restoring damaged, decayed and unsightly teeth. We were very fortunate to attend an intensive 2 day training course at his practice overlooking Lake Como, Italy. The venue was superb, nestled into the hillside and Lorenzo's dentistry was absolutely stunning. We both got a lot out of the course and it was a great break from the British summer!

February 2007 - Stephen Lusty joins the team

stephen lusty

Stephen Lusty, our Dental Technician, will have his Dental Laboratory on site. He is extremely talented and the quality of his work speaks for its self. Just see our before and after section to see what can be achieved.

A little about Stephen

I am from Port Elizabeth in South Africa, and I studied in Cape Town at Peninsula Technicon. I did my Diploma in Dental Technology from Jan 1994 to Dec 1996, and my Higher Diploma in 1997. In '97 I won the Molteno Brothers Award for Student on the year. After studying I attended many more courses on wax work, milling, ceramics etc. most notably Gerald Ubassey's course on anterior aesthetics in 2003.

I worked for a year after studying at a local lab in Port Elizabeth, after which I went to work for 2 years for one of the most forward thinking technicians in the country where I was able to get to grips with some of the latest equipment, and techniques.

In Jan 2001 Sandra and I moved over to London and within two weeks I was working for Carrington and Lewis, one of the oldest and most prestigious labs in the West End. At this lab I was exposed to mostly implant work and large cases, I was the only ceramist in the lab and we catered for some of the members of the royal family as well as countless actors and other celebrities.

In March 2005 I bought into BR Ceramics Ltd. At this time I started giving talks on the Ankylos Implant System for a client of mine from the West End.

I enjoy spending time with Ethan and Sandra, mountain biking, Golf, Scuba Diving (I am a qualified rescue diver) and Snowboarding. I was brought up in a coastal town, so I am looking forward to moving back to the coast and seeing if I am still able to surf after more that 15 years.

I am also hoping to get back into Rock Climbing on some of the sea cliffs down here."
